Innocent creatures pay for our mistakes.

The road to mass extinction was paved with good intentions. Who could know that the pesticides, herbicides, genetic engineering, and monoculture tracts we created to protect food crops and increase their yields economically would kill farming's most essential laborer: the honeybee?

 

Maurice Maeterlinck knew:  “If the bee disappeared off the face of the earth, man would only have four years left to live” ― The Life of the Bee.

Yet Maeterlink's is the narrow view. We need David Foster Wallace to open our eyes:

"When a solipsist dies...everything goes with him." The cosmic irony, of course, is that the world we self-centered consumers of fossil-fueled industry are taking with us includes these others — and so many, many more...
